10 Reasons to Hire a Content Writing Company Over an Internal Writer

“We are in maintenance mode.”

“We don’t have the bandwidth to fully execute our marketing plan.”

Sound familiar?

A lot of times companies reach out to us for content and copywriting services because they’re stuck in between a rock and a hard place. They have the best of intentions to create and execute a beautiful content marketing plan, but they don’t have the bandwidth.

If you’re like most marketing directors, half the battle is creating a content plan that gets approval and the other half is implementing it. When you’re on a small or mid-sized team, it can be really hard to beat both battles.  You can only do so much, and marketing people are often pulled in a million directions. So as much as you WANT to get all the things done, it’s simply not possible.

I have noticed that some teams are better at creating the content marketing plan and not as great with the execution, and those people will show me an elaborate, color-coordinated spreadsheet that’s far behind schedule. Other teams don’t even have time for the plan, they just execute what they’ve always done. Either way, the problem is that you only have so much time in the day and hours in the week.

Finding The Time For Content Writing

You have a few options when you’re in this situation. Carry on until you break and find yourself posting content about National Paperclip Day and resharing blogs from 5 years ago. Or you could beg, plead, and cry until your boss allows you to hire someone to add to the writing team. Although that’s a whole journey in and of itself. Or, you could outsource copywriting and have someone else take things off your plate.

Outsourcing Your Writing

There are a number of different areas where an outsourced marketing or communications company could assist, from graphic design and collateral creation to social media management and administrative tasks. Writing companies like us typically come into play when the company has a content-heavy marketing plan or a website overhaul--anywhere a lot of content or copywriting is involved, obviously.

10 Reasons to Hire a Content Company

Wouldn’t it just be easier for a company to hire an internal content marketing person for their writing needs? Not always. Here are 10 reasons that overwhelmed marketing directors should hire a writing company instead of using an internal person:

  1. Less Expensive: Hiring a writing company is cheaper because you don’t have to pay the overhead of an internal staff writer.

  2. Faster: It’s faster because you don’t need to spend the time getting someone up to speed. A writing company will just swoop in and take things off your plate.

  3. Expertise: You are getting an expert. With the job market being in favor of candidates, there’s no guarantee you could find an internal candidate that meets your requirements and has your industry experience. At Lauren Perna Communications, our team is trained in writing for the life sciences, healthcare, and mental health industries, so we know how to speak the language.

  4. Attention: A good writing company will spend the time to learn your business and your vision, so it feels authentic to your brand.

  5. More Resources: On that same note,  a writing company can become an extension of your team without the high cost associated with talent or the invite to happy hour (unless, of course, you want us there).

  6. Revisions: Almost all writers offer at least one, if not more, rounds of revisions. This ensures you get what you want (within reason!).

  7. Diverse Experience: Writing agencies often have a team of writers with diverse experiences. Even if you only work with one writer, you are getting the collective expertise of a broader team.

  8. Broad Marketing Knowledge: A good writer will optimize for SEO, know which platforms work best for your business, and how to speak to multiple audiences. An internal team member may have this experience, too, but this is what we do for multiple clients, all day long so we really get it.

  9. Bespoke Experience: A professional writing company will tailor each experience. At our company, there Is no plug-and-play situation. We give you the white glove every time, and we make sure you’re happy which leads to my final reason….

  10. Making Your Job Easier: We are easy to work with and friendly! I can’t say if that’s true about all writing companies, but I know it’s true for us, and that’s just one more reason.

The one caveat is that there are LOTS of content writers out there. You’ll find a variety of experiences, styles, and prices. And many of those writers will check all the boxes I listed above. However, if you are in a highly regulated or incredibly niche field, you should look for a communications company that writes about your industry and has the writing samples to prove it.

Even if you’re not in a niche field, we still strongly suggest working with a content writer with extensive experience, an excellent portfolio, and a solid process so you can get it right the first time and every time.

Curious how we work at Lauren Perna Communication? You can learn more about our process and our samples on our website. Or, drop us a note, and let’s chat. We’d love to help tell your story.
